What Makes a Great Interior Cleaner?
Five things separate a useful bottle from a shelf ornament.
- A surface list that is specific. "Safe on everything" is a red flag. A product that names leather, vinyl, glass and LCD screens is making a claim you can check against your own cabin. The listings you read on a store page can differ from the label, so trust the label.
- Chemistry that fits the surface. Leather cleaners are usually sold as "pH-balanced" (Lexol and Chemical Guys' leather cleaner both say so). Fabric shampoos are built to foam and lift soil. Hard plastics and screens want a cleaner that dries without a film.
- A clear job. A cleaner removes soil. A conditioner is the step that follows on leather. A protectant is about UV. Lexol's cleaner, for example, is described as free of waxes and additives and as prep for conditioning, while Chemical Guys' Total Interior adds UV protection to the cleaning. Bottles that promise all three can be convenient, but know which job you are buying.
- What it leaves behind. Silicone, wax and gloss are listed on some labels and absent from others. A slick film on a steering wheel is a grip problem, so see the steering wheel leather cleaner guide for that part.
- A number you can actually read. pH values below come from the makers' safety data sheets where one was printed. A pH figure tells you where a liquid sits between acid and alkaline. It does not replace the surface list on the label.
Agitation matters as much as chemistry on cloth and textured plastic: the cleaner loosens soil and the brush gets it moving.
#1 Chemical Guys Total Interior Cleaner & Protectant: The One-Bottle Spray

If you want one spray for the whole cabin, this is the one the maker pitches that way. Two things to know before you buy: it lists a silicone-type ingredient (the dimethyl siloxane), so if your trim or screen maker says to avoid silicone, read their guidance first. And Chemical Guys says to spray GPS and LCD screens, clear plastics and electronics onto a microfiber towel rather than onto the screen, and to test an inconspicuous spot before using it near aftermarket window tint.

#2 P&S Xpress Interior Cleaner: The Multi-Surface Cleaner
Specs
- Ready to use, no dilution.
- Safety data sheet (2018): described as a mild detergent solution, pH 8.5 (slightly alkaline), with citric acid at 1 to 4%, amine oxide and a sulfonate surfactant, in 70 to 90% water.
- Surfaces: the Amazon listing copy says leather, vinyl, plastic, rubber, wood and fabric. Other retail listings are narrower (leather, vinyl and plastic) or add Alcantara and suede, so the surface list depends on where you read it.
- Sizes: pint, quart and gallon. The Amazon listing linked below is the 1 gallon.
P&S does not describe it as pH-neutral, and it is not acid-free: the safety data sheet gives a pH of 8.5 and lists citric acid. "Slightly alkaline, mild detergent" is the accurate description, and a reason to test a hidden spot before using it on a coated or dyed surface. Directions on retail listings say to spray the surface, a scrubber or a microfiber, agitate if needed, and wipe off with a second towel.

#3 303 Interior Cleaner: The Silicone-Free All-Surface Spray
Specs (per Gold Eagle, the 303 owner)
- Surfaces named: vinyl, plastic, rubber, leather, fabric and upholstery, carpet, glass and LCD screens.
- Gold Eagle states it contains no silicone. Safety data sheet (2019): pH 7 to 8.
- Directions: on leather, plastic and vinyl, spray and wipe. On LCD screens, spray onto a microfiber and wipe gently. On fabric and carpet, spray, wait about a minute, use a soft brush, then wipe. On glass, spray and wipe.
- Size: the Amazon listing is 16 oz.
The name is a moving target: Gold Eagle says "303 Automotive Interior Cleaner", its safety data sheet says "303 All-Surface Interior Cleaner", and Amazon says "303 Interior Cleaner for Dash, Glass & Screens". Match the title on the bottle you buy.
The clear selling point is the combination of a screen-safe direction (microfiber first, not the screen) and a no-silicone statement from the owner. 303 sells a separate 303 Protectant, so if you want UV protection as its own step, that is a different product rather than something this cleaner does.

#4 Lexol All Leather Cleaner: The Dedicated Leather Cleaner
Specs (manufacturer claims, per Lexol)
- A "pH-balanced" formula designed for leather, with foaming action and no silicones, alcohols, waxes or additives. Safety data sheet (revised 2025): pH 6 to 8.
- Meant for finished (coated) leather, which Lexol notes is what most automotive and furniture leather is.
- Raw or unfinished leather: not recommended unless the label says so. Perforated leather: a light application, without oversaturating. Test a hidden spot.
- Sold as a spray and a bottle, in 16.9 oz and in an 8 oz bottle. The Amazon listing is the 16.9 oz.
Lexol is a leather specialist, which makes it unusually clear about what it does not cover. Its guidance does not address suede, nubuck, Alcantara or patent leather, and its separate Lexol Naturals cleaner says not to use it on suede. If your seats are anything other than ordinary coated leather, read the label before you spray.

- Contents: Leather Cleaner and Leather Conditioner. The Amazon listing is titled "Leather Cleaner & Conditioner Kit" and is 2 x 16 oz. Chemical Guys now sells it as the Leather Care Starter Kit in 16 oz and 4 oz.
- Cleaner: a "pH-balanced formula" that "won't stain leather or change the texture", for fine natural, durable sealed and synthetic or faux leather, and vinyl. Chemical Guys does not publish a pH number and does not mention aniline leather.
- Conditioner: contains Vitamin E and leaves a matte finish. For leather, faux leather and vinyl.
The maker lists natural, sealed and synthetic leather and never names aniline, so if your seats are aniline or otherwise unusual, test a hidden patch first. Chemical Guys also sells the two bottles separately, plus a Sprayable Leather Cleaner & Conditioner In One (Vitamin E, aloe, lanolin, propolis and wax, per the maker) for a single step.

Adam's sells a Leather & Interior Cleaner (foaming 6 oz, plus 16 oz and gallon sizes) that the maker calls "a strong cleaner". Adam's says to test colored leather for dye loss and to dilute with up to 50% water if anything other than dirt comes up on the towel. A stronger option, if you are willing to test first.

#6 Chemical Guys Foaming Citrus Fabric Clean: The Cloth and Carpet Shampoo

- Full name: Foaming Citrus Fabric Clean Carpet & Upholstery Shampoo. "Oxygen-infused" foam that lifts dirt and stains, with a citrus scent, for cloth seats, floor mats and carpet.
- Sizes: concentrate in 16 oz, 32 oz and 1 gallon; a ready-to-use 16 oz spray. The Amazon listing is the 16 oz concentrate.
- Directions: vacuum first, shake and "dilute as desired" (no ratio is given), apply, agitate gently with a brush, blot with a microfiber, and vacuum again.
The directions describe hand use with a brush. Chemical Guys' page says nothing about portable extractors or anti-foam additives, so if you plan to run it through a machine, check the label and the extractor maker's guidance, and see the best interior extractors for carpet and upholstery. - Safety data sheet (2025): pH 7.66 to 9.66. The 2015 sheet said 7 to 8, so the formulation or the data changed.
The pH range on the current sheet reaches the alkaline side, which is a reason to treat the bottle's own surface directions as the final word on leather and screens.
Adam's makes a comparable product, the Interior Detailer, and states plainly that it contains silicone and that it "may be smeary on glass or screens" if overused. That is a useful reminder that detailers differ in what they leave behind, so read the finish notes, not just the surface list.

Before You Buy: What to Check on Your Car
A couple of minutes with the car and the label saves a lot of regret. This list is built from the warnings the makers themselves publish.
- Screens. Chemical Guys and 303 both say to spray onto a microfiber towel, not onto the screen. Adam's warns that a silicone detailer can smear on glass and screens when overused.
- Aftermarket window tint. Chemical Guys says to test an inconspicuous area first.
- Leather type. Lexol's cleaner is for finished (coated) leather. Raw or unfinished leather is not recommended unless the label says so, and perforated leather gets a light application without oversaturating. Test a hidden spot. On colored leather, Adam's advises a dye-loss test.
- Suede, nubuck, Alcantara and patent leather. The leather cleaners above do not cover them, and Lexol's Naturals cleaner says not to use it on suede. For Alcantara, the maker's own guidance is a soft brush or dry cloth for dust, a lightly damp white cotton cloth weekly, water and gentle soap for deeper cleaning, and no aggressive solvents, alcohol products or steam machines, with no vigorous rubbing.
- Coated interiors. If your leather has a ceramic coating, follow the coating maker's instructions before putting any cleaner on it; the ceramic coating for leather interior surfaces page is the place to start.
- Silicone. Chemical Guys Total Interior lists a silicone-type ingredient, while 303 and Adam's Total Interior Cleaner say they are silicone-free. If a trim or screen maker tells you to avoid silicone, choose accordingly.
- The label, not the listing. Surface lists differ between listings of the same product (the P&S example above), so read the bottle you actually receive.

Not by itself. The safety data sheets give Lexol 6 to 8, 303 7 to 8, Chemical Guys Total Interior about 7.5, P&S 8.5 and Meguiar's Quik Interior Detailer 7.66 to 9.66. Only Lexol and Chemical Guys' leather cleaner describe themselves as "pH-balanced". A pH figure says nothing about the other ingredients or the surface, so the stated surface list and a hidden-spot test still decide.
Q: Can I use these on Alcantara or suede?
Do not assume so. Lexol's guidance does not address suede, nubuck, Alcantara or patent leather, and its Naturals cleaner says not to use it on suede. Alcantara's own advice is dry dusting, a lightly damp white cotton cloth, and water with gentle soap for deeper cleaning, and it says to avoid aggressive solvents, alcohol products and steam machines.
Q: How often should I condition leather?
Lexol describes a conditioned finish as lasting about six months, depending on use, and recommends cleaning first so the leather is prepared for conditioning. Chemical Guys does not publish an interval for its conditioner, so follow the bottle.
Q: Can I run the fabric shampoo through a carpet extractor?
Chemical Guys' directions describe hand use: vacuum, dilute as desired, apply, agitate gently with a brush, blot with a microfiber, vacuum again. They give no dilution ratio and do not mention extractors, so check the label and your machine's manual before using it in a tank.
