#1 Meguiar's Gold Class Endurance Tire Gel: The High-Gloss Gel

• Item G7516, 16 oz. Meguiar's describes a gel built to avoid overspray and drips, with macropolymers and copolymers meant to last through washing and rain.
• Per Meguiar's safety data sheet, the formula is mostly dimethicone (40 to 60%) with an isoparaffin solvent and white mineral oil, so this is a silicone-and-solvent gel, not a water-based dressing.
• Directions per Meguiar's: clean the tires first with a tire cleaner, work on cool, clean, dry tires, apply a moderate dab with a foam pad or soft cloth, keep it off the tread and wipe off the excess. Wipe right away for a lower shine, or add a second coat for more.
• Meguiar's says the gloss "lasts weeks" and that the gel has UV protection against browning and fading. Treat both as manufacturer claims.

• Chemical Guys describes a creamy, dry-to-touch, non-greasy formula with UV blockers, meant for tires, bumpers, trim, dashboards, door panels, vinyl seats and mirrors.
• It is used undiluted. Chemical Guys lists no dilution on the current product page. Per the maker: put 2 to 5 sprays on a foam or microfiber applicator, spread, buff the excess and wait 5 to 10 minutes before adding another layer.
• Finish: buff lightly for glossy, buff thoroughly for matte. For tires, Chemical Guys says to clean them and let them dry fully, because wet rubber dilutes the product and streaks.
• Chemical Guys does not say "water-based" in words, but the safety data sheet shows a pH of about 7.5 and no flash point, which fits a water-based emulsion.

Don't confuse it with Chemical Guys' Tire + Trim Gel, which the company describes as oil-based.

• Page header: "High Gloss, No Sling Tire Dressing." Adam's calls it silicone-based and silica-infused, with a newer version that adds silica-resins for longevity and shorter dry time. Adam's does not give a number for either.
• Adam's says it dries to the touch in minutes and describes it as a low-sling formula.
• Directions per Adam's: start with a washed, decontaminated, fully dry and cool surface, spray on, then wipe with an applicator. Adam's recommends a VRT Block or Pro Tire Hex Grip applicator, especially for large tread blocks. Whether the 16 oz bottle includes one is not stated, so check the listing.
• Surfaces per Adam's: tires and exterior rubber and plastic trim, such as bumpers, cowls, mirror caps, bed rails and door seals.
• Sizes: 16 oz, a 16 oz two-pack, gallon and 5 gallon, with a 32 oz on a separate page.

• Per its safety data sheet (issued 2022), the liquid has a pH of 9.3 and no hazardous ingredients above the reporting cutoff. That is worth knowing if you are picky about what touches your wheels and paint.

Griot's also sells silicone-based alternatives. Black Satin Tire Coating is an aerosol (item 10951, 15 oz) that Griot's lists at up to 4 weeks, and Black Shine Tire & Trim Coating is the super-high-gloss option at 4 to 6 weeks, both per Griot's.

• Gyeon claims it lasts more than 5 washes (up to 6 in its FAQ) and doesn't sling when applied correctly. These are maker claims.

What to Check on Your Car Before Buying

Most of these come straight from the makers' warnings, so a minute with the label saves a redo.

• Two-wheelers. Meguiar's says Endurance is not for bicycles, motorcycles or other two-wheeled vehicles. If the dressing is headed for anything other than a car, read the label first.
• The tread. Meguiar's says to keep the gel off the tread, and Armor All says not to use its foam where slipperiness may be hazardous. Dress the sidewall only.
• Clear plastic and glass. Armor All warns that its foam smears on them. Keep any foam away from lenses, glass and clear trim.
• Wheel and paint finishes. Dressing makers write directions for tires and exterior rubber trim. They don't make promises about coated wheels, polished aluminum, chrome or paint, so treat those as keep-off zones and wipe overspray right away. If your wheels are coated, read whether ceramic coating for wheels works before choosing a dressing.
• Tire condition. Meguiar's, Adam's, Chemical Guys and Gyeon all start from clean, fully dry tires, and Meguiar's and Adam's add cool. Gyeon wants old dressings removed before Q2 Tire goes on.
